Sound Research Conclusion

Musical Features:

From my research into sounds I believe that our music should include the following features to be successful in following through with the thriller genre.

  • Chromaticism - In both the accompaniment and the melody of the music, this adds ambiguity and therefore the sense of unease and supernatural occurrences
  • Exaggerated contrasting pitches - The motif/ the melody should be higher and the accompaniment should be the extreme opposite, being low, adding tension
  • A motif (short melody) - This will add tension, especially if repeated over the accompaniment, also will highlight the thriller genre
  • Distortion/Editing of sound - This will provide the feel of supernatural events and the distortion will set the audience at unease, highlighting the thriller genre
  • Isolated enhanced sound effects - This makes the audience feel involved with the scene and provides jump scares
  • Regular sound effects in the music - this causes the audience to question what is happening and if they heard something out of place in the music, making them feel more uncomfortable, again reinforcing the thriller genre
  • Panning - This involves the sound moving from speaker to speaker, giving the viewer a feel of being in the scene
Instrumentation ideas include:
  • Orchestra
  • Strings
  • Electric guitar
  • Electric piano
  • Percussion
